As most of the jailbroken iphone/iphone users know that in the past the jailbrokers group under the name Comex had developed an unofficial edition of the Adobe Flash known commonly as the ‘Frash’. The program runs easily on iphone 3GS and iPad and then later it was ported to iPhone 4 as well.

stop jailbreaking idevices

Yesterday while using twitter, I saw a tweet from a user which says something like iPhone users are warned that they shouldn’t be using Frash. Here is the short summary what that article was all about,

iPhone users have been given notice not to install the software which require their idevices to be jailbroken first. (For those who still don’t know what jailbreak is all about, Short and simple words..Jailbreaking means to crack the operating system of smartphone of any vendor and modify it to run unapproved applications).

However, as alluring as it seems, according to Barmak Meftah from Fortify Software (a security software company), Even though jailbreaking seems to have its benefits but it is also giving room to be exploited by hackers. The issue deals with privacy and security concerns. He added that even though Frash looks appealing to both the 3GS and iPhone 4 users who want to enable flash in their idevices, the fact is that for installing Frash software the users must jailbreak their handsets which will lead to loading of applications from any reliable or unreliable source.

Users are warned that even though Apple carefully looks out for unknown applications on App store, such measures cannot be taken for third party iPhone applications or open sources. These can be corrupted by hackers and then put out for free downloading.

The article further says that the users are again urged that no matter how interesting or eye-catching the free application seems they should be cautious about the kind of application that they download from unverified links or sources.

Well IMHO, i agree with the part that jailbreaking might expose our idevices to dangers, but these dangers are as similar as the dangers every PC user faces? isn’t it? Sure if one doesn’t want to jailbreak then he shouldn’t! I think it is one of the lamest thing to put false fear in others mind that if you install this you cellphone will get infected.

My opinion regarding jailbreaking is that it gives us the freedom and functionality we want from our idevices (that Apple won’t give as default) and furthermore, Comex is a well-known and a trusted source known by many of us and it is indeed  even lamer to target only the Frash app as suspicious! Thousands of people do jailbreaking daily, all of them do it just to install this app called Frash? definitely not! the main reason due to which jailbreaking started and later declared as legal was Apple’s restrictions itself.

And once again targeting Frash is the most lamest reason that I have seen to stop people from jailbreaking their iDevices because the whole source-code of Frash is available at github. So anyone can download it, check it, compile it and run  it to check whether its infected or not, Calling Frash as a malware is just Lame and hopeless!
