In the world of search engines there are many companies that are constantly trying to get ahead of the largest and the most used search engine i.e Google. Recently another search engine called as Blekko was launched the aim was defeat Google by delivering “better” and “improved” search results.

why blekko failed

To be more specific regarding Blekko case, this search engine uses input taken by human into algorithmic based results to screen-out desired content from different content farms (take Demand Media as example).

I personally think if Blekko’s continue using this strategy then its chances of succeeding as a search engine are very tiny because:

  1. Most of the times, search never get broken no matter what phrase you search. On the other hand search results that are generated by Google are generally very decent. Most of the people can easily find what they are looking for and with very few queries.
  2. When somehow search gets broken, it generally because the term/phrase or question you are searching is not suited enough to be answered by algorithmic search.
  3. An average computer user does not have any clue about “slashtags” and how/why/when he want to use these tags.

Furthermore, the search engines of today can be used to find restaurants to eat at, and finding best possible cameras or other gadgets that we should buy, and many other similar things but in case of Blekko the weakness of search results related to queries like these is not Demand Media’s problem.

Nowadays, search engines could do a much better job of telling you which restaurants you should eat at, which cameras you should buy, and many other things–but, again, the reason search is weak on those queries generally isn’t a Demand Media problem.

When we look in a bit broader view, the main reason behind pretty much failure of all these next generation innovative search engines (including the mighty Bing which is spending about billions of dollars just to get ahead of Google) is that the Google – the current generation search engine is pretty damn good.

So in my opinion if Blekko want to end up as a large business then it must have to offer everything a current generation search engine is offering but also have to offer something else that others aren’t!
