Surprisingly on this Monday, Nokia made an announcement regarding the open source symbian project that Nokia is planning to take back control of it. Since the Nokia’s inception, Symbian (one of the oldest operating system for cell phones) it has always been Nokia’s favorite.

Investing so much in symbian seems little odd as almost an year ago it follows an announcement that Symbian will no longer be used in Nokia’s high-end devices and the replacement would be a strong contender call Meamo, a linux-based project. But from the recent release of nokia’s new N8 cellphone we have seen that instead of using Linux based OS, nokia has yet again relied on its old fellow, the Symbian operating system.
I think Nokia’s decision of sticking with symbian operating system might have something to do with the fact that although it definitely sounds interesting that Maemo has incorporated into MeeGo project but in reality Maemo has never been able to escape from the pull of Linux roots and has never really delivered upto the expectations.
Whichever might be the case but at the moment, this is a time of chaos for cellphone operating systems. The money is on Apple’s iOS and Google Android.

What will be the future of symbian OS? well being android fan myself, can’t say for sure about symbian’s future neither I care about it (whether it lives or die). In my opinion, Symbian has lived its life over the last decade, it was like the windows operating system that many of us bear but never actually like it.
Anyhow, I personally think that symbian is getting old and having hard time keeping up with all these modern trends in cellphone industry, symbian wasn’t designed to be so much scalable. In the late 1990′s Symbian was known as EPOC and was used in various Psion devices. It was very useful back then since it was really remarkable to have any sort of operating system in handheld devices, at that time windows mobile operating system was also there (windows CE) which was undoubtedly awful.
Just after few years EPOC made leap to cellphones (and became symbian operating system; its new name), no doubt this was a giant leap made by symbian and begin a new era in mobile technology but apart from being useful and innovative there were big issues too, the main issue was that the symbian OS was damn slow; Thus making it really annoying and frustrating to use.

For the past years, the other annoying thing in symbian (which can be noticed from the questions asked by users in nokia support forums) is that for many users, configuration of symbian os is really hard, many users can be seen complaining about unable to find required options. YES, some user interface improvements have been made in the recent years but it is clear that right now Symbian is only trying to catch up with iOS & Android and whenever any technology needs catch-up, it gives us hint that it might going down soon!
I think Nokia should better look into the possibility of adopting android, and say goodbye to the Symbian so that it can rest in peace in the sky, Nokia should give a try to Android, Customers will love it!
