Yesterday I came across an article on “The Inquire” Where the author (Egan Orion) has expressed his opinion regarding Microsoft new Windows Phone 7 operating system. According to him, we shouldn’t get our hopes up about the new Windows Phone 7 OS and one be cautious about making a decision regarding purchase of cellphones running on Windows Phone 7.

In his opinion, There are many reasons that make people believe that WP7 based cell phones will going be a major flop, Egan gave three main reasons that will cause WP7 to fall flat on its face in the cellphone market of today.
The first main reason he gave for believing WP7 operating system to be a flop is that it’s already been handicapped due to the inheriting Windows Mobile legacy for the mobile operating systems; As all based on the Windows CE which is no-doubt an awful platform which was developed initially for pocket PC’s.
Over the past ten years that Microsoft have been developing their Windows phones and they have ‘not once’ stood out in any amazing ways, and have never really gained popularity among the masses. The Windows phone market has declined over the past ten years and currently has market share of less than 10% in the and globally the market share is far less than 5%.
Windows Mobile has already been rejected by the many mobile phone users and having memories of their/or their friends bad experiences with windows mobile and will naturaly going to feel skeptical of windows phone 7 which will in result obviously going to hurt WP7 market.
The second reason for the flop he mentioned was that the specification of the smart-phones laid by Microsoft are quite ordinary and in some respect the specs are even lower than the current competing smart phones present in the market today. WP7 phone has displays of 800×480 resolution that comes in sizes from 3.6 to 4.3 inches and on the other hand Apple;s iPhone4 has 3.5 inch display supporting 960×640 resolution with much sharper retina display of 326ppi, which is definitely more attractive as compared to WP7 ones; iphone4 also has 25 to 50 percent higher resolution causing iphone4 screen will going to look more clearer and sharper at 12 inch distance in comparison WP7 based handset at 15 to 18 inches and not only that, iPhone 4 also has a massive 60% larger display area.
Not just iphone 4, Even smartphone like the Motorola Droid also has higher resolution and better display than WP7 handsets, as motorola supports 854×480 resolution, and other smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S which is an Android based handset, supports equivalent 800×480 resolution display. Similar scenario is with the processors and the camera, Snapdragon chip of 1GHZ clock-rate that is specified for WP7 handset is no faster that the Galaxy S processor (ARM Cortex A8). Hence according to Egan, there is hardly anything that stand out in the WP7 cellphones, almost everything is similar to the Android cellphones available in the market.
The third reason he gave to predict the flop of the Windows Phone 7 by saying that Windows have produced this phone but they didn’t necessarily finish it. For the most part it works, but they claim that they will add the Mobile OS features as soon as they have reached a high quality.
So these are the three main reasons he gave in explaining why the Windows Phone 7 is predicted to fail, I myself not much agreed with all these critics regarding WP7 and I believe that they should have waited until the phone was finished.
Later while reading the comments to his opinion one comment that caught my eye was from ‘Bosco’, In response to that article he wrote that windows vista was the lagacy for windows 7, but that did not stopped it from succeeding. (A far as i think) the only mistake with both WM5/WM6 was the sharing of common platform for pocket PC devices and cellphones. Although the PockketPC’s were a major success in the enterprise world but due to the limited user interface & underlying OS consumer phones had suffered.
In the display technology higher resoluton is not everything. Nodoubt iPhone has a brillient screen but so is 800×480 pixels 4.3 inch screen on HD2/HD7. Regarding the larger screen area of iPhone4 in comparison wth the WP7 handsets, Bosco explained that in terms of pixels YES, iphone does have 60% more area for the display but that doesn’t going to make it more usable For example try Comparing Yahoo mail on HD2 or HD7 and on iPhone4. The HD2/HD7 are comparatively easier to work with as compared to iphone4 due to the physical screen size (making it easy to use even you have large manly hands).
Yes at the moment WP7 is not offering all of the desired features pre-enabled coming right out of the gate but as we have seen in the past that Apple did added cut & paste stuff afterward.
In my opinion, the approach that Microsoft is targetting for WP7 is quite decent i.e. to target the mostly those feature first that are of most importance to the consumer, and then keep improving and enhancing with later releases.
So will Windows Phone 7 going to fall on its face and is a flop from the start? I don’t think so.
